I now find myself heading into NYC at least once monthly. I rarely get to travel in via Grand Central Terminal however since Amtrak connects to Penn Station. So, this weekend I made a special trip via the Metro North to connect to Grand Central. This was a leisure trip, so I could enjoy the city and Grand Central without an agenda or timetable. I’ve been there many times (Penn many more), but it never gets old. The building and its various features and shops within are always regal and impressive.
It’s hard to imagine it, but it was in serious decline in the mid-20th century, and was saved from demolition in the 1970s due in part to the advocacy of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis and other notable preservationinsts and advocates.
It was restored and modernized as part of a preservation effort, and was named a National Historic Landmark in 1976. The station again underwent a revitalization in the 1990s when the Main Concourse and the building’s Beaux-Arts architectural details were restored. The most recent improvements – in 2023 – introduced Long Island Railroad service.
