As a sociologist it’s impossible for me to overstate the profound influence W.E.B. Du Bois has had on American social thought and theory. William Edward Burghardt Du Bois was a pioneering scholar, civil rights activist, and one of the most influential sociologists of the 20th century. He was born in 1868 in Great Barrington, Massachusetts.

W.E.B. Du Bois and Great Barrington

I visited Great Barrington on October 12, and had the opportunity to witness the deep reverence the city holds for Du Bois. His legacy is prominently featured throughout the town via artwork, historical markers, and many other tributes that reflect his enduring influence.

Du Bois excelled academically during his schooling in Great Barrington, where he completed high school. His scholastic achievements paved the way for his admission to Harvard University, where, in 1895, he became the first African American to earn a Ph.D. from the institution. His groundbreaking accomplishments continue to be celebrated here, where his legacy is honored with memorials and educational initiatives. This includes the W.E.B. Du Bois Homesite, which is a National Historic Landmark.

Pioneering Social Thinker and Activist

Du Bois is a foundational figure in the field of sociology. His work laid an early roadmap for empirical social research, and his commitment to social justice was deeply intertwined with his scholarship. In 1909, he co-founded the NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People), where he applied his sociological insights to advocate for civil rights, education, and political representation for African Americans and other marginalized communities.

His contributions significantly shaped methods of sociological inquiry into race and inequality. Du Bois’s groundbreaking research and tireless activism remain relevant today, continuing to inspire scholars, activists, and thinkers around the world.
